The DT 880 Black Special Edition sounds very neutral and relaxed. The bass reproduction is accurate but not overstated. This feature gives the headphones a really transparent sound and makes the individual components of the music clearly audible. Thanks to its semi-open design, the DT 880 Black Special Edition allows some ambient noise to penetrate and escape, but attenuates it somewhat stronger than in the case of fully open headphones such as the DT 990 Edition.

Which model is the best? DT 880 Edition or DT 990 Edition?
Both models are similar in terms of their mechanical and acoustic quality. The numbers 880 and 990 do not provide any indication of higher or lower quality. The models do, however, differ significantly in their playback in terms of acoustic design and frequency response.
What is the technical difference between DT 880/990 Edition and DT 880/990 PRO?
The corresponding variants with the same impedance sound the same. The same transducer systems are used. The Edition models have a slightly softer headband for enjoying music at home while the Pro phones have a tighter fit onto the head for everyday work in the studio.
How can I tell what the impedance of my DT 880/990 Edition is?
You can tell the impedance of the integrated sound transducers from the connection plug. The impedance is sometimes hot stamped onto the plastic shaft of the plug:<
If there is nothing there, the model has an impedance of 250 ohms.
If it reads 32 Ω, the model has an impedance of 32 ohms.
If it reads 600 Ω, the model has an impedance of 600 ohms.
In which way do the different impedances of the DT 880 Edition and DT 990 Edition differ in terms of sound?
The sound differences between the various impedances are very slight and most people can only actually hear them when the sounds are compared directly. They are, in any case, smaller than the differences between any one of these variants and competitor products.
In general, it can be stated that the resolution and precision of the high mids and highs is slightly better at higher impedances. There are barely any differences worth mentioning apart from this.
The variants of DT 880 Edition and DT 990 Edition with higher impedances (250 ohm and 600 ohm) should only be used by people who
already own such a model and want to replace it,
insist on the (minimally) better mid- and high-frequency playback,
are sure that the headphones will at least not be used on mobile players,
can, particularly for operation of the 600 ohm version, provide sufficient output voltage on the device to which the headphones are connected.
To reiterate clearly: The low-resistance, 32-ohm headphones are also an absolutely high-quality variant with excellent transmission characteristics that match the best competitors in the price class. If you want a flexible and sufficiently loud solution, you are better off using the 32 ohm version in most cases. All sound advantages of the 250 ohm and 600 ohm variants are ultimately of no benefit if the headphones on the player being used do not produce the required volume.
