Introduction to recording of acoustic guitars

What does A/B and X/Y miking actually mean and how exactly should you position the microphone for a mono recording? We have a few first tips for you.

SINGLE-
MIC
To record an acoustic guitar with only one microphone, it is recommended to position the microphone about 20 cm away from the fretboard and to turn it in slightly so that it points to the 12th fret. For a leaner sound, the microphone can be turned further towards the neck. For a bassier sound, move the microphone closer to the sound hole.

A/B
Miking
With this type of miking, another microphone is positioned behind the bridge aligned with the guitar top, in addition to the mono microphone. To prevent phase problems, make sure that the duration of sound from the guitar to both microphones is identical.

X/Y
Miking
For X/Y miking, microphones with cardioid polar pattern should be used. The two microphones are placed at a 90-degree angle to each other at the transition between the body and the fretboard. One microphone points to the fretboard, the other to the body of the guitar. The membrane should be as close to each other as possible.
